Basketball Scoreboard Explained for Small Broadcasts

A basketball scoreboard should make the score, teams, period, and clock easy to read at a glance. For small broadcasts and gym displays, the biggest challenge is not only what to show, but who can update it reliably during play.

Core basketball scoreboard elements

  • Home and away team names.
  • Current score for each team.
  • Game period or quarter.
  • Game clock or event timing context.
  • Readable colors and layout for the viewing distance.

Broadcast versus gym display

A broadcast overlay usually needs to be compact so it does not cover the action. A gym display can be larger and more direct. In both cases, the score should be updated from a private control surface rather than from the public display.

Volunteer-friendly workflow

  1. 1

    Prepare before tipoff

Set team labels and test the Viewer on the actual display or OBS scene.

  2. 2

    Assign the scorer

Give Shared Control to the person responsible for live score changes.

  3. 3

    Keep owner access nearby

Use the Owner Console for setup changes or recovery during the event.

FAQ

Can a basketball scoreboard be controlled from the sideline?

Yes. A trusted scorer can use Shared Control from a phone or tablet while the Viewer stays on the stream or gym screen.
